La Reservoir
Every three years, Heimspiel offers a platform for artists from Vorarlberg, Fürstentum Liechtenstein and the cantons Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus, St. Gallen and Thurgau. The format connects artists and institutions and showcases the region's diverse art scene. This year's edition of Heimspiel takes place in Kunstraum Dornbirn, Kunsthaus Glarus, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Werk2 in Arbon and at Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen.
Katja Schenker works with the body and materials. Her works invite the audience to engage in physical experiences. The piece Lady Thames, presented in the exhibition, is a video performance recorded in the Thames riverbed at the moment of the lowest tide. The receding water transforms the urban space, revealing accumulations of smooth, rounded bricks—London’s characteristic building material for centuries. In this open urban landscape, the body also loses its fixed standpoint, finding new orientation at the center of a circular motion.
Katja Schenker explores the possibilities of the body within space as well as the body as a space. Her interest lies in the performative aspects of spatial creation. In her works, the body is experienced and positioned in relation to its surroundings. In the context of LA RESERVOIR, water, body, and city take on a mythical storage function, emphasizing their interconnectedness. The artist was born and raised in St. Gallen, the "city in the green ring."
