On the occasion of Frieze Masters 2023, Galerie Mitterrand will present a selection of small-sized sculptures from artists of the same generation, working between the 1950’s and the 1980’s.
The aim of this presentation is to highlight the ways in which artists have appropriated the field of small-scale sculpture, creating works that can be described as "domestic sculptures". From the steel structures of Marta Pan and Lynn Chadwick to the wooden compositions of Agustín Cárdenas, this presentation will focus primarily on abstract and minimalist sculpture.
Through forms and materials, the aim is to understand the choice made by these artists to meticulously work their materials to create smaller formats, thus adapting to the needs of collectors wishing to exhibit sculptures dedicated to their interiors.
A central platform on our stand will host a dozen sculptures by Lynn Chadwick, Agustín Cárdenas, Mark di Suvero, Francisco Sobrino and Marta Pan. They will be placed on pedestals of varying heights, establishing a visual rhythm.
Finally, to illustrate the practice and sculptural research of these artists, a selection of drawings will accompany this presentation.
