Mitterrand gallery, in collaboration with Studio Naegeli, is proud to present Gesture, an exhibition in Gstaad that explores the language of movement, form, and abstraction in contemporary and modern art. Featuring works by some of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries— John Armleder, Jean Dubuffet, Günther Förg, Hans Hartung, Yayoi Kusama, Gerhard Richter, Pierre Soulages and Jean Tinguely — Gesture invites visitors to witness how these iconic figures have reshaped the act of painting with their radical and pioneering approaches.

At the core of this exhibition is the exploration of the "gesture »—the material engagement with the act of creating, the brushstroke, and the spatial boundaries of art. Each artist in this show investigates the interplay between the artist’s physical presence and the resulting artwork. These gestures are both performative and conceptual, infused with personal histories, political undertones, and the shared exploration of universal themes.

Gesture is an exhibition that brings together artists who, in different ways, have elevated the expressive capacity of the artist’s body, gesture, and hand in the creation of art. The exhibition curates not only the finished works but also the residue of process—the evidence of the artist's interaction with the materials, the physicality of the canvas, and the spontaneity that defines so much of modern and contemporary art.

Following the Lalanne exhibition held by Mitterrand gallery in the summer of 2024, this second presentation in collaboration with Studio Nägeli in Gstaad—is the perfect backdrop for such a group of essential artists. The tranquil alpine environment will provide a unique counterpoint to the dynamic and often tumultuous energies of the works on display. Visitors will be invited to reflect on the relationship between gesture, space, and perception, encountering the works up close in a setting that invites contemplation and dialogue.
