On the occasion of Art Basel Miami Beach 2022, Galerie Mitterrand is pleased to present a historical solo show with unique and rare wood and bronze sculptures, alongside works on paper by Cuban artist Agustín Cárdenas.
This body of work from the Agustín Cárdenas’ estate takes us back to the origins of the artist's work with his 1950’s and 1960’s wood sculptures. The wood in which he sculpted his elongated silhouettes and totems is a quintessentially ‘raw’ material. His choice of wood as a medium and the way he works with it allude to his ancestral origins, referencing African traditional artifacts and statue making. Cárdenas uses different types of wood, sometimes painting it or burning it. This presentation would then continue with a more recent bronze work from the 1970's.
