Biography
Alighiero Boetti was born in Turin, Italy, in 1940. After briefly studying economics and business, he devoted himself to art. In the 1960s, he emerged as a leading figure in Arte Povera, using everyday objects and ordinary materials. His first solo exhibition at Galleria Christian Stein in Turin in 1967 reflected this exploration of supports and processes freed from traditional painting.
His work quickly developed a conceptual dimension, grounded in the relationships between order and disorder, identity and otherness, rules and chance. With Gemelli (1968), a photomontage in which he appears holding hands with his double, he questioned the unity of the artist’s identity. In 1972, he introduced an “e” between his first and last names, becoming “Alighiero e Boetti”, placing this duality at the heart of his practice.
Language occupies a central place in his work. In his embroidered squares, coloured letters are arranged within a grid that transforms words into patterns. Their apparent dispersal conceals a phrase that the viewer must piece together by following an unconventional reading order. The works entitled Ordine e disordine make this tension particularly palpable: geometric organisation produces a visual disorder that deciphering resolves. Writing retains its meaning, but that meaning is discovered through the image.
His ballpoint pen works extend this exploration of sign systems. In Mettere al mondo il mondo (1975), a dense field of strokes incorporates an alphabet and commas arranged according to a code. Reading requires the viewer to connect these elements, becoming an active participant in the construction of meaning. The time spent filling the surface and the variations in the marks also lend it a sensory dimension.
Boetti entrusted a substantial part of the execution of his works to others. His embroideries, notably the Mappe and letter squares, were produced by Afghan craftswomen. This collective practice introduced choices and skills that lay partly beyond his control, while questioning authorship and the relationship between conception and execution.
Alighiero Boetti died in Rome in 1994. His work was the subject of a major travelling retrospective at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid in 2011, followed by Tate Modern in London and MoMA in New York in 2012, confirming his prominent place in the art of the second half of the twentieth century.
